Public Culture Space

Public Culture Space is a minimalist pavilion design that extends Newark's cultural activities into the public realm. The structure features a sheltering canopy that creates space for art education and workshops, while incorporating a large-scale screen for outdoor film screenings and events. This simple yet impactful intervention aims to increase visibility of local cultural institutions through active public programming.

  • Client: Private
  • Location: Newark, NJ
  • Program: Outdoor Film and Art Education Space

This lightweight structure is a simple but visually engaging extension of the cultural activity happening in downtown Newark, and brings that activity out into the public realm. The project creates an opportunity to collaborate with cultural institutions in partnerships that drive public awareness and attention back to the institutions’ other public, and often less visible, pursuits.

The form provides a sheltered belly for outdoor art education and workshops, as well as a large screen for films and events.
